- Team Outlook from McKeen’s Hockey Guide
Going into the 2013 campaign, the main question was if the Anaheim Ducks could squeak into the playoffs. It wasn’t long before they turned the conversation to what seed they would be able to secure.
Anaheim’s hot start rivaled Chicago’s through mid-March and the team peaked at 20-3-3, but their fortunes waned from there and the Detroit Red Wings ultimately ousted them in their seven-game first-round series.
One of the major factors in their hot start was goaltender Viktor Fasth. After spending his entire career prior to 2012-13 in Europe, the now 31-year-old netminder briefly took over for Jonas Hiller during his early struggles and injury problems before complimenting Hiller once the long-time Ducks goaltender bounced back. The duo should continue to serve them nicely in 2013-14, although with Hiller entering a contract year, Anaheim may face a tough decision in the not-too-distant future.
Secondary scoring will be the big X-factor heading into this season. Although Corey Perry and Ryan Getzlaf will continue to serve as the team’s leaders, the Ducks have several promising young forwards that might step up including new arrival Jakob Silfverberg, who was acquired from the Ottawa Senators in the Bobby Ryan trade. The question now is can Silfverberg, along with the likes of Peter Holland, Emerson Etem, and Kyle Palmieri, be important pieces of the puzzle.
Teemu Selanne’s recent decision to re-sign certainly helps regardless. Although his age is finally starting to impact his production and is expected to lead to him taking games off this season, his presence helps solidify their second line.
Additionally, with Selanne definitively stating this will be his last season, it also makes it a prime opportunity to close out his career with a championship. That has to count for something.

Dobber’s lowdown on: Nick Bonino – Still only 25, Bonino showed signs of being a very capable second liner last season. He was derailed by a torn hamstring, which kept him out for 21 games, but you can work that to your advantage. He’s very much under the radar but is a safe bet for the low-40s with upside for more. He had 12 points in his last 21 games and enjoyed a four point game on February 2. As long as the Ducks don’t add another top center, Bonino is a very safe dark horse. His ice time went up by about a minute and half per game over the two games that (the recently traded) Bobby Ryan missed.
Teemu Selanne is having his fourth annual inner debate about whether or not he should retire. This time, he probably should. Go out on top. After his four-point game to kick off last season, he managed just 20 points in 45 games (and was a minus-11). He’s now 43 and can play 65 games and get 35 points. But is that what he wants? He’s a free agent, but if he signs it will be with Anaheim. Update: he signed. One more year.
After Ryan Getzlaf (48.0%) and Saku Koivu (51.4%), there wasn’t really anybody shouldering a lot of faceoffs. Bonino is getting better at the draw (46.8%) and should take 1000+ of them this year.
Matt Beleskey got 46% of his points last year playing 26% of his shifts with Getzlaf and Perry. At this point, Silfverberg is the favorite for that spot, with Palmieri and Beleskey as lesser possibilities. Palmieri’s points are a little more independent. He got 29% of his points playing 23% of his shifts with Getzlaf and Perry, meaning he still produces without the star linemates.
Emerson Etem played fewer than 10 minutes in 11 of his first 15 games. But in his last 30 games he was held to fewer than 10 minutes in just two of them. Clearly indicates growing confidence and a high likelihood that he’s on the team for good.
Dustin Penner is on a short leash, but in the beginning you can expect him to get quality power-play time and linemates. As he stumbles, one of Etem, Silfverberg, Palmieri or Beleskey will turn their (no doubt) poor start around. Keep that in mind Penner may be draftable, but should be traded by the end of October. And that’s when you acquire one of the aforementioned wingers at a low price.
