The Arizona Coyotes have traded forward Martin Hanzal, Ryan White and a 2017 4th round pick to the Minnesota Wild for a 2017 first round pick, a 2018 second round pick, a conditional 2019 4th round pick and Grayson Downing.
Bob McKenzie: Conditions on the 2019 pick – If the Wild win one round, it’s a 3rd round pick. If the Wild win two rounds, it’s a 2nd round.
Craig Custance: Hanzal also has to play in 50 percent of the game.
Bob McKenzie: The Coyotes are retaining 50 percent of Hanzal’s salary.
The 30-year old Hanzal was drafted 17th overall in the first round of the 2005 draft by the Arizona Coyotes. Hanzal is a pending unrestricted free agent and carries a $3.1 million salary cap hit.
The 28-year old White was drafted 66th overall in the 3rd round of the 2006 draft by the Canadiens. He carries a $1 million cap hit.
Some thoughts from the media …
Bob McKenzie: “Combo of weak 2017 draft class/being loaded with prospects – Eriksson Ek, Kaprizov, Kunin, Greenway – allows MIN to use picks for rental.”
Frank Seravalli: “Hanzal’s durability has been a real issue. This is his 10th season in Arizona and he hasn’t played 70 or more games since 2009-10.”
Craig Custance: “Wild have lost in in the past b/c they’ve lacked centers to compete in West. Will enter postseason w/Staal, Koivu & Hanzal down the middle.”
Shawn Simpson: “Minny going all in. Great year but an old bunch. Doubt they can sustain a long playoff run.”
Eric Engels: “It’s a steep price to pay, but a year ago Minnesota was begging for size up the middle. They’ve since added Staal and Hanzal to go with Koivu”
Jonathan Willis: “Just a reminder that Hanzal is in fact a perpetually positive shot metrics guy who plays brutal QualComp and gets tough zone starts.”
Brian Wilde: “The Hanzal deal sets a high bar for the market. Winners here are owners of Vanek, Duchene, Shattenkirk et al.”
Mike Johnson: “That seems very steep for Hanzal… Sometimes the best trades are the ones you don’t make.”
Mark Lazerus: “One the one hand, the No. 29 pick is no sure thing. On the other hand, holy crap that’s a lot for a guy with a career high of 16 goals.”
Brian Wilde: “Points for 60 of only 1.33 for Hanzal is not a fair number when you play on a poor team. He’s much better than that number.”
