Darren Dreger: In a bizarre change, the Predators trade Victor Bartley to the Coyotes for Stefan Elliott. The Coyotes then send Bartley and John Scott to the Canadiens for Jarred Tinordi and a minor league player.

3:07 PM:

The Montreal Canadiens have a trade in the works that would send defenseman Jarred Tinordi to the Arizona Coyotes for Stefan Elliott and John Scott.

  • Bob McKenzie: Sounding like Elliott won’t be Montreal long. Could be flipped.
  • Darren Dreger: The Canadiens are trying to then send Elliott to the Predators for Victor Bartley.

The 23-year old Tinordi was drafted 22nd overall in the 2010 draft by the Canadiens. He carries a $850,500 cap hit.

The 24-year old Elliott was drafted 49th overall in the 2009 draft by the Avalanche. He carries a $650,000 cap hit.

The 33-year old Scott was undrafted. He carries a $575,000 cap hit.

The 27-year old Bartley was undrafted. He carries a $666,667 cap hit.

Some media thoughts:

  • L.A. Lariviere: “Bottom line : Tinordi had little to no value on the market for a significant trade”
  • Renaud Lavoie: “#canadiens didn’t want to put Jarred Tinordi on waivers knowing he’ll get claim. Value on the trading market wasn’t high.
  • Grant McCagg: “There are multiple layers to the Scott deal. I would suspect this will officially end the DSP era.”
  • Eric Engels: “I think it’s a trade that takes Scott (UFA) at 575K for Tinordi (RFA) at 850K… I don’t see Scott playing for #habs”
  • David Pagnotta: “If that’s all it is for Montreal (Tinordi to AZ, Scott & Bartley to MTL, Elliott to NAS), it’ll free up some cap space for future deals.”
  • Thomas Drance: “I often look at primary assists as a rough proxy for ‘puck-moving ability’. Bartley is oddly good by this metric
  • Adrian Dater: “John Scott left Gila River Arena already, with sources saying looking very unhappy”
