NHL Trade: Blackhawks Acquire Weise and Fleischmann From Canadiens

The Chicago Blackhawks traded for Dale Weise and Tomas Fleischmann

The Chicago Blackhawks have acquired Dale Weise and Tomas Fleischmann from the Montreal Canadiens for a 2018 2nd round pick and Phillip Danault.

Renaud Lavoie: The Canadiens are retaining 30 percent of Weise’s salary.

General Faneger: With retaining 30 percent of Weise’s salary, the Blackhawks now at $140,447 in projected cap space at the end of the season. $653,079 in deadline cap space.

The 27-year old Weise was drafted 111th overall in the 4th round of the 2008 draft by the Rangers. He carries a $1.025 cap hit.

The 31-year old Fleischmann was drafted 63rd overall in the 2nd round of the 2002 draft by the Red Wings. He carries a $750,000 cap hit.

The 23-year old Danault was drafted 26th overall in the 1st round of the 2011 draft by the Blackhawks. He carries a $863,333 cap hit.

Some thoughts from the media:

Bob McKenzie: “CHI may be done adding pieces but it’s not iron clad. If Hawks choose to deal Bryan Bickell, it could open up cap space for another move.”

Mark Lazerus: “Time will tell, and if the #Blackhawks win the Cup, it was obviously worth it. But I’m not so sure this move HAD to be made. We’ll see.”

Corey Pronman: “Danault is a high-energy forward. Very good skater, can PK, good hockey IQ. Doesn’t have great hands. Could be a long-term 3rd line F.”

Arpon Basu: “The Habs can put Philip Danault in their lineup right away. I don’t think anyone expected them to get that between now and Monday. I didn’t.”

Mark Lazerus: “#Blackhawks gave up two former first-rounders, a 2016 first-rounder, and two 2018 picks for Ladd, Weise and Fleischmann, all pending UFAs.”

Eric Stephens: “Stan Bowman ain’t effin around, is he?”

Pierre LeBrun: “Decent return for the Habs. But again, Stan Bowman all-in. Impressive.”

Chris Kuc: “Somehow, Bryan Bickell remains in the #Blackhawks’ system.”
