The Edmonton Oilers have traded defenseman Brandon Davidson to the Montreal Canadiens for center David Desharnais.

The 25-year old Davidson was drafted 162nd in the 6th round of the 2010 draft by the Oilers. Davidson carries a $1.425 million cap hit for one more season.

The 30-year old Desharnais was undrafted. Desharnais carries a $3.5 million salary cap hit and will be a UFA at the end of the season.

Thoughts from the media …

John Shannon: “With the acquisition of David Desharnais, suspect this will allow Draisaitl to live full time on McDavid’s wing.”

John Lu: “ & Oilers swap 2 guys who beat the odds, personally & professionally: Davidson is a cancer survivor & Desharnais was an undrafted UFA.”

Michael Augello: “Montreal has made two trades for depth defenseman, but still have not pulled the trigger on what they really need…scoring.”

Renaud Lavoie: “We have to expect more movement. only have 4 center in Montréal now. Depth is needed at that position too.”

Brayden Sullivan: “Odd thought. Does this help EDM get a big cap off the books in expansion, seems like Davidson was concensus one taken. Halak?”
