- Craig Custance of ESPN: Flames captain Jarome Iginla wants to win the Cup, and he’d like to do it with the Flames. He thinks the Flames have a shot, as any team that makes the playoffs has a legitimate shot. Eric Francis of the Calgary Sun wrote a piece about Ray Bourque and how he left the Bruins for a shot at the Cup with the Avalanche. Demanding a trade to a team doesn’t guarantee that “it’s any better on the other side”
“Absolutely,” Iginla agreed. “There’s probably a couple teams — Washington got off to a great start, Pittsburgh is pretty strong, not even with having back. But I wouldn’t even say those teams are above the way Colorado and Detroit used to be above us, above the rest of the group. It is a danger, you think, ‘Oh, it’s a better chance,’ but really, you have to be in the playoffs and give yourself those chances. Unfortunately, we’ve missed out on a couple lately. Each year is another chance.”
There is a growing group of people how think the Flames would be better off trading Iginla. Iginla has a no-movement clause so it’s ultimately up to him.
“You know what? The organization year in and year out committed financially to the cap to spend and give the team a chance,” Iginla said. “That’s important, too. I believe if we’re close and that one player, if you need that, I think they would go for it as opposed to some teams just financially can’t do it. There’s a lot of positives. I just want to get there.”
