Damien Cox of the Toronto Star: Jussi Rynnas’s agent said today that he’ll be signing with the Toronto Maple Leafs. Rynnas’s agent, Allain Roy, has notified the Stars, Oilers, Red Wings, Flyers, etc, that he’ll be negotiating a deal, that will be finalized over the next 48 hours with the Leafs.
Rynnas will get the opportunity to work with Francois Allair and compete with James Reimer for playing time with the AHL Toronto Marlies next season. The Finnish elite league isn’t all the strong, but the Leafs feel he was the top goalie prospect on the market.
Jonas Gustavsson is signed 2 more years, and JS Giguere’s contract expires after next season. Rynnas deal will be a 3-year entry level deal.
There will be a lot of question marks surround Rynnas as he flew under the radar until this season. Adjusting to a North American style of game may take some time, as well the potential pressure of playing in the Toronto market. One thing that might be on his side is that the Marlies usually fly under the radar in Toronto as well.
