Starr: “Now that Evangelista is no longer a Predator as he goes to the New Jersey Devils, all this begs the question: Are we on the cusp of the NHL trade market shaking loose, and what does this mean for the Montreal Canadiens?

D’Amico: “I think bust open may be a little too aggressive, but I think it may shake loose here. I think there are a couple of teams that were kind of waiting.
Like, folks, everyone’s kind of coming back to work, like really officially back in the office next week, and I think that’s when you’re going to start seeing more serious questions or contracts that are still unaccounted for. There is the September 16th deadline as well for contract extensions for eight years, front-loaded deals, heavy signing bonuses.
So does that impact as well? We’ve, we’ve talked about this before, but now you’re starting to see deals where they’re, I guess, in anticipation, right? Like. it’s very difficult to understand why Chris McFarland, a GM that just came in, trades one of their better young players. He had 56 points last year and is only making $3 million this year, but is up for a contract extension next summer. Why he would trade him for just a first and a second, right?

You know, and I think a lot of people in Montreal were like, okay, so young top-six players are available, and the answer to that is yes. Some of them are, and when they are, you usually pounce.”
