The Philadelphia Flyers have acquired the rights to pending unrestricted free agent defesneman Mark Streit from the New York Islanders for a 2014 4th round pick and winger Shane Harper.

Streit was originally drafted by the Montreal Canadiens in 2004, 262nd overall in the 9th round. Streit carries a cap hit of $4.1 million last season.

The Flyers now have exclusive negotiating rights with Streit until July 5th.

Harper was undrafted, signing a free agent deal with the Flyers in 2010.

Bob McKenzie: Have to believe that the Flyers are looking at compliance buyouts for Ilya Bryzgalov and Daniel Briere to free up cap space.

Bob McKenzie: Streit will be signing a 35+ deal, so even if he retires, his cap number will count against the cap. He will likely be looking for a long-term deal in the $5 million range. McKenzie corrects himself, a deal in the $4 million to $5 million range.

Darren Dreger: Pat Brisson, Streit’s agent, will begin contract talks with Flyers GM Paul Holmgren. They are looking for a four-year deal.
