Jason Smith Retires, Tanguay Officially Signs

The Ottawa Senators caught a nice break today when it comes to their salary cap situation, as defenceman Jason Smith retired. The move will save the Sens $2.6 million against the cap, putting them below the cap limit. They are now in a better position financially if they are unable to move Heatley before the start of the season.

Alex Tanguay officially signed with the Tampa Bay Lightning yesterday, 1 year at $2.5 million. I think this is a great signing for them, at an excellent price. It’s too bad their ownership is a mess, and they are trying to buy each other out. Len Barrie is under investigation from another investment opportunity, and doesn’t have the money to buy out the other owner. No word if Barrie will be bought out.
