John Tavares Rumors and Notes: Tavares Not Into Signing A One-Year Deal Then A Long-Term Deal Later On

John Tavares

On John Tavares …

John Shannon: “At the risk of blowing twitter up… John Tavares has no deadline to sign a deal. The June 30 mark was only for the NYI. And that was only for an 8 year term.”

Larry Brooks: “If–if–multiple teams were pushing 1+8 scenario in talks with Tavares, and he was receptive to concept, then NYI extra-year advantage was meaningless. And I wonder if NHL would automatically register a one-year deal.”

Dan Rosen: “There’s some risk he’d be taking on, but John Tavares can still commit to 9 years to a team. Sign 1 year deal in this UFA period, agree to terms on an 8 year extension to be signed after Jan. 1.”

Dan Rosen: “My thought on the John Tavares front for a long time has been if you’re him, don’t you want to know who the Islanders’ No. 1 goalie is going to be before you commit to them? May not play a role. I’m not sure. But it should.”

Arthur Staple of The Athletic: reports that John Tavares and his camp were not interested in doing a large one deal, then signing a long-term later on.

“A few tidbits from Saturday’s long day of silence on Tavares: It’s believed his camp rejected the possibility of any team (most likely the Leafs) offering a large, one-year deal now with the promise of an eight-year extension on Jan. 1, so Saturday was down to weighing an eight-year offer from the Islanders vs. seven-year offers from other teams.”
