Monday morning notes on the Maple Leafs, Flyers, Jets, Coyotes, Canadiens, Devils, Isles, Oilers and Kings
Mark Easson
Kevin McGran of the Toronto Star: The Maple Leafs sent goalie Ben Scrivens to the AHL yesterday, with more cuts expected today. Matt Frattin will likely skate with Mikhail Grabovski and Nikolai Kulemin in Thursday’s opener, that’s if Grabovski is healthy enough to go. Coach Ron Wilson thinks that Grabovski will be able to go, and is hoping that Tyler Bozak and Tim Connolly can play as well. Ron Wilson has joined twitter and is following Kyle Turris. His first tweet: “Need hybrid icing rule change! Have seen too many horrific injuries!”
Sam Carchidi of the Philadelphia Inquirer: Teams have until Wednesday at 3 PM to submit their rosters to the NHL. The Flyers will likely only be keeping 2 of Brayden Schenn, Sean Couturier and Matt Read. Couturier could get a 10 audition with the club before they have to make a final decision on him.
Ed Tait of the Winnipeg Free Press: The Jets have released forward Janne Pesonen, and sent Paul Postma and Jason Gregoire to the AHL. Contract talks between the Jets and Mark Scheifele are progressing.
Jim Gintonio of the Arizona Republic: Coyotes coach Dave Tippet gave the starting job to Mike Smith, with Jason LaBarbera backing up. The Coyotes still have 3 cuts to make.
Pat Hickey of the Montreal Gazette: The Canadiens will get an update today on defenseman Chris Campoli. Campoli took a blow to the head on Saturday from Lightning forward Ryan Malone.
Chris Botta of the NY Times: Petr Sykora should find out this afternoon if he’ll receive a contract from the Devils or if he’s released by the team.
Jeff Marek via twitter: The Islanders assigned 17 players to Bridgeport of the AHL. 1st round pick Ryan Strome is with the team. BD Galiof via twitter: With the Islanders signing Steve Staois, it allows Calvin de Hann to continue his development in the AHL. He’s likely to get a callup when injuries arise.
James Mirtle via twitter: The Oilers have placed Gibert Brule on waivers. Jim Matheson via twitter: Matheson heard the Canucks were sniffing around Brule at the trade deadline but his contract was too big.
Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: The Oilers need a puck moving defenseman, and Maple Leafs Carl Gunnarsson’s name keeps popping up. Could the Oilers be interested in Bryan McCabe? The Oilers could be without defenseman Ryan Whitney (ankle), Ladislav Smid (shoulder) and Taylor Chorney (knee) for the opener. Smid possibly has a dislocated or separated shoulder. Same Gagner will start the season on the IR with an high ankle sprain. The Oilers have 27 guys in camp after assigning Teemu Harikainen to the AHL, and putting Ryan O’Marra, Ryan Keller, Josh Green and Gilbert Brule on waivers. Matheson wonders if Linus Omark is the team’s 3rd line RWers, or if they are taking calls for him. Omark has 5 pre-season points.
