Morning Hits: Injury Updates, Oilers Cuts Coming and Lapierre

Henrik Zetterberg and Sean Monahan
On the Edmonton Oilers …

Jim Matheson: Oilers forward Matt Hendricks will be out for weeks with a lower-body injury.

Jack Michaels: Sounding like the Oilers will be making cuts before their practice today.

On the Nashville Predators …

Chris Nichols: Pierre LeBrun said Predators coach Peter Laviolette “is going to unleash P.K. Subban, and tell him to do his thing. So for sure I think Subban is going to have a big year.”

On the New York Rangers …

Steve Zipay: Max Lapierre was released from his PTO with the Rangers yesterday. Rangers coach Alain Vigneault: “When we compared his game to a couple of our younger guys, we felt there wasn’t that much difference.”

Renaud Lavoie: After being released from his PTO by the Rangers, Lapierre is looking at a couple offers from European teams.

On the Calgary Flames …

Derek Willis: Flames center Sean Monahan was wearing a no-contact jersey yesterday and took part in a one-on-one battle drill.

On the Dallas Stars …

Mike Heika: Tyler Seguin was starting to ramp up skating yesterday according to coach Lindy Ruff. Ruff is assuming that Seguin will be ready for the start of the season.

On the Detroit Red Wings …

Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press: Both Henrik Zetterberg and Niklas Kronwall took part in practice sessions yesterday. Both have been dealing with knee issues and are uncertain if they will be ready for their Oct. 13th season opener. Zetterberg appears to be further along than Kronwall.

“It was about time I could get back and do a little bit more,” Zetterberg said. “Gives me a little time to ramp it up a little bit and get ready.”

Zetterberg is expected to play more wing than center this season. The amount Kronwall plays this year will be about pain management.

“We have somewhat of a plan in place,” he said. “But in saying that, you feel how you feel every day. If something doesn’t feel right, then you have to take a step back. But so far, we’ve been able to move along.”
