Outlook for the Season:
Last season for the Nashville Predators ended with a hard-fought but disappointing series in the first round of the playoffs against the Chicago Blackhawks. It was one of the most entertaining series, with two of 6 games taking multiple OT periods to crown a winner. Captain Shea Weber was injured during Game 2, taking him out of the lineup for the rest of the series, injecting some uncertainty into a team that had been very, very good during the regular season. With Weber healthy and a largely unchanged roster, the Preds will again be a force to be reckoned with in the Central Division.
One of the most exciting names to watch this year will be Filip Forsberg. Forsberg, 20, was the Calder frontrunner for most of the year, but in a surprising turn of events, didn’t even make the list of finalists. Many cited his down play late in the season, but the fact remains that Forsberg lead the Preds’ offense in points (63), points/60 (2.65), and goals (26) last year. Nashville plays a fast, slick game with lots of puck movement that suits Forsberg’s style, so he’ll likely avoid the ‘sophomore slump’ that often plagues young players.
Keeping their focus on youth going, Nashville added center Cody Hodgson, 25, this summer. Hodgson was bought out by the Sabres after posting the worst numbers of his professional career, and elected to sign a one year “prove yourself” contract with the Preds. As with most skaters from teams that tanked last season, it’s difficult to know how much of Hodgson’s stats were a sign of decline, and how much was the environment in which he played. Likely to join the 3rd or 4th line, Hodgson should definitely see an improvement in his production – last year was the first time his Shooting percentage has ever dropped below 11 percent.
The Preds also have a few youngsters hoping to make a full time transition to the NHL this year. Kevin Fiala, 18, only played one game with the club in the regular season, but is committed to making the NHL roster this year. He returned to Nashville early so he could train before development camp, and GM David Poile was very impressed by his dedication. Another name to watch is Max Reinhart, 23. Acquired from the Flames for a conditional 4th round pick, Reinhart has spent most of his career in the AHL, but could be a forward Nashville is counting on to provide them depth as the season goes on.
This season, the Nashville defense looks no less daunting, with the top pair of Shea Weber and Roman Josi returning. With 43 and 54 points respectively, and 15 goals each, the two are always part of the Norris conversation, though neither of them was a finalist last year. There are some concerns that Weber is slowing down as he recently turned 30, and while it’s true that this pair has the highest Scoring Chances Against per 60 of any Nashville defender with more than 50 games, their 25.4 SCA/60 average is right at league average. Couple that with the 25+ minutes per game the two play, and they still remain one of the most dangerous duos in the league. Aside from the well known names, the Preds host a strong roster of Dmen including Ryan Ellis, Mattias Ekholm, and Seth Jones. They even added former St Louis Blues player Barret Jackman for when they need some extra size on the ice.
Pekka Rinne should be strong in net again this year. He had a great bounce back season in 14/15, posting a 0.923 Save Percentage – his highest since 11/12, and coming in second in Vezina voting. The Finnish net minder has been plagued by injury throughout the last few seasons, but when he’s healthy, he’s one of the best goalies in the league.
With Rinne in top form, the youthful offense going at full speed, and a strong defensive core, the Predators a popular pre-season pick to compete for the number one spot in the Western Conference.
Trending Up:
Seth Jones: The 2013 4th overall pick impressed again in his second full NHL season, putting up 27 points for 1.01 points/60. Of the Nashville defenders, he held the second highest all situation Corsi For % (a shot based measure of possession) at 54.6%, only behind Ryan Ellis.
Probably the most important indicator of how far his game has come: after Weber was hurt in the playoffs, it was Jones who stepped in and filled those minutes, jumping from 15 minutes a game to over 24. Jones also received an invite to play for Team USA at the World Championship, putting up 4 points in 10 games and earning a bronze medal. This season, look for Jones to continue grabbing more ice time as he establishes himself as the next marquee defenseman.
Trending Down:
GM David Poile: In one of the more controversial decisions of the offseason, Predators GM Poile re-signed Center Mike Ribeiro to a two year, $3.5mil/year contract. The controversy isn’t because of the numbers, which are very reasonable, but because Ribeiro is embroiled in the middle of a civil suit filed by a woman seeking damages for sexual assault when she was 18 and working for him as a nanny.
Re-signing Ribeiro sent ripples of shock through the hockey community, and many women outwardly expressed their disgust with the move – and Poile’s statements calling Ribeiro a family man and a “person of character”. With Nashville hosting the All Star Game in 2016, it’s not a stretch to wonder if this will have a monetary impact, as many female fans have decided to boycott the event, and all Predators games. It also means that Poile is on the hook for any further issues Ribeiro may have, especially if more evidence comes to light in this civil suit.
Trade Deadline Outlook:
While fans rest easy when Rinne is in net, the backup situation, however, is a cause for concern. Carter Hutton started 17 games last season, posting a 0.902 Save Percentage, which is…not good. 24 year old Marek Mazanec started 22 games in 13/14 with again…a 0.902 Save Percentage, sending him back to the AHL. If Rinne goes down for any length of time, expect Nashville to be in the market for someone more reliable between the pipes.

* Different sites have different guidelines for who is a ‘prospect.’
1. Kevin Fiala: Left Wing – 5’10” / 180 – Last year the Preds had rookie sensation Filip Forsberg take the NHL by storm and was an early Calder Trophy favorite. Fiala hopes to repeat that performance but will have some monster competition in Connor McDavid and Jack Eichel, timing is everything! Fiala spent parts of last season on five different teams as a 19 year old playing pro hockey in Sweden and North America. He played 20 games for HV71 in the SHL and represented Sweden in both the WJC and the WC. He played 33 games in the AHL where he scored 20 points and finally made his NHL debut playing one regular season game at the end of the season as well as game four against Chicago in the Conference Quarter-finals. He will have to win a job out of training camp, but he is projected to make the team out of training camp and could play the wing on a line with Calle Jarnkrok and Cody Hodgson.
2. Jimmy Vesey: Left Wing – 6’1” / 194 – Vesey had a breakout season for Harvard scoring 58 points to lead his team in scoring and to an ECAC Championship. He won several individual awards including ECAC and Ivy League player of the year and was a finalist for the Hobey Baker award. He also represented team USA at the WJC in 2013 scoring five points in seven games helping USA to win the Gold and again played for USA last year at the WC winning the Bronze Medal scoring three points in nine games. Vesey will return to Harvard for his senior year as a 22 year old and will make his pro debut at the end of the school year. He has the size and skill to walk right into the NHL now.
3. Colton Sissons: Centre – 6’1” / 187 – After seeing 17 games with Nashville in his first year as a pro, Sissons played the entire year in the AHL in his second season and put up back-to-back 25 goal seasons and was named an alternate captain. Sissons is a heart and soul type player who is sound defensively, has offensive up side and is a team first player. He is on a scoring line in the AHL but projects as an excellent third line centre in the NHL. He may need a little more time in the AHL but will be an impact player when he arrives.
4. Juuse Saros: Goalie – 5’10” / 178 – Shortly after he was drafted in the fourth round, Saros had a breakout performance for Finland at the ’13 WJC posting a 1.57 GAA and a .943 save% to lead Finland to the Gold Medal. Last year he played for HPK in Finland posting impressive stats again against pros with a 2.14 GAA, and a .929 save%. He was also named to team Finland at the WC but was limited to one game and posted a shutout as Pekka Rinne’s backup. Saros will make his North American debut this year in the AHL and may see a few seasons there playing the starting role with Milwaukee as Rinne is the incumbent in Nashville. There is no need to rush the heir apparent in Saros who projects to be the next franchise goalie.
5. Vladislav Kamenev: Left Wing – 6’2” / 203 – Kamenev has had his KHL mutually terminated which will allow him to come over to North America. Kamenev has played the last two years in the KHL against men and as a 19 year old will likely play this season in the AHL. Kamenev has also represented Russia at the WJC in a checking line role and still managed to produce four points in seven games. More of a two-way player than a typical flashy offensive Russian forward his game should translate well in North America, the question is how long will he be in the AHL before he earns a regular spot in Nashville?
