The Los Angeles Kings buy out defenseman Dion Phaneuf
Curtis Zupke of the LA Times: The Los Angeles Kings have bought the final two years of defenseman Dion Phaneuf’s contract.
The 34-year old would have carried a $5.25 million cap hit for the Kings for two more seasons. The Kings are rebuilding and looking to move out some of their higher priced, older players.
CapFriendly: Phaneuf’s buyout will be shared by two teams – the Kings at 75 percent and the Ottawa Senators at 25 percent.

The Philadelphia Flyers to buy out defenseman Andrew MacDonald
NHL: The Philadelphia Flyers have placed defenseman Andrew MacDonald on unconditional waivers for the purpose of terminating his contract.
“It was a difficult decision and it was solely related,” Flyers general manager Chuck Fletcher said. “This guy’s a consummate professional. We asked a lot of Andrew. … He’s just a quality person and a guy that played a very effective two-way game for our team, but we are in a cap world and we made that tough decision today to try and relocate some of those dollars to maximize our chance to stay in the hunt for some players over the next couple of weeks.”
CapFriendly: A MacDonald buyout will give a the Flyers a salary cap hit of $1,166,667 next year and $1,916,667 cap hit in 2020-21.
Had they not bought out MacDonald, he would have carried a $5 million cap hit next season.
