NHL News: Ducks, Islanders, Rangers, Senators, Penguins, Maple Leafs, Capitals, and Jets

Marc Staal leaves after taking a hit to the head. Patric Hornqvist out with a lower-body injury.

On the Anaheim Ducks …

Eric Stephens: Defenseman Francois Beauchemin said again that this will be his final season in the NHL.

On the New York Islanders …

Brian Compton: Forward Nikolay Kulemin skated before the Islanders had their morning skate yesterday.

On the New York Rangers …

Steve Zipay: Forward Jimmy Vesey and defenseman Marc Staal left last night’s game after taking hits to the head from Filip Forsberg and Alexei Emelin.

Larry Brooks: Marc Staal left last night’s game early. He has had three concussions while being with the Rangers.

On the Ottawa Senators …

Bruce Garrioch: Forward Mark Stone is skating but is not ready to return today. He hasn’t been ruled out for Tuesday’s game.

“I have to find out if it swelled up again,” Senators head coach Guy Boucher said Saturday. “There’s no structural problem waiting to heal. It’s the swelling. Once the swelling is gone, then he’s ready to play.”

Coach Guys Bourcher didn’t have an update on Bobby Ryan‘s hand injury.

“As soon as I’ve got some specific updates I can give you, I will because I’m looking to see how long myself he’s going to be out,” Boucher said.

On the Pittsburgh Penguins …

Jonathan Bombulie: Forward Patric Hornqvist took a hit from Brooks Orpik on Friday night and missed last night’s game with a lower-body injury.

“He’s continuing to be evaluated,” Sullivan said. “We don’t have a timeframe for him at this point. We’ll probably have more information over the next couple of days.

“We don’t anticipate it being long term.”

Jason Mackey: The Penguins put Conor Sheary on the IR and recalled Zach Aston-Reese.

On the Toronto Maple Leafs …

Terry Koshan: The Maple Leafs activated Morgan Rielly and loaned Justin Holl to the AHL.

On the Washington Capitals …

Jason Mackey: Forward T.J. Oshie was fined $5,000 for his cross-check on defenseman Kris Letang.

On the Winnipeg Jets …

Ken Wiebe: Forward Matt Hendricks left last night’s game with an upper-body injury.

Ken Wiebe of the Winnipeg Sun: Forward Mark Scheifele has been out since December 27, and is getting close to returning to the lineup, maybe as early as Friday.

“He’s not going to have a conditioning curve here. Because it’s upper body, he’s been able to skate. He’s a real fit guy and he pushes himself real hard,” Jets head coach Paul Maurice said following an optional morning skate. “So once he gets through a couple of heavy contact days, he’ll be ready to go. I don’t have him for Arizona (on Tuesday), but I won’t rule him out for St. Louis (on Friday) just yet.”

Adam Lowry is out again with an upper-body injury and is day-to-day.
