NHL News: Oilers, Kings, Wild, Flyers, Sharks, Lightning, Knights and Ovechkin

Alex Ovechkin and Ryan Callahan
On the NHL-NHLPA competition committee …

Pierre LeBrun: The committee met yesterday for over five hours: new goalie chest protectors should be in place for next season; sense of group was positive on goalie review moved to Toronto situation room late in season so that should continue. There was a healthy discussion on Rule 48; and Coaches’ Challenge is status quo”

On the Edmonton Oilers …

Frank Seravalli: The Oilers could announce the hirings of Glen Gulutzan, Manny Viveiros and Trent Yawney as assistant coaches as early as today.

On the Los Angeles Kings …

Curtis Zupke: Kings senior advisor Jack Ferreira won’t be having his contract renewed. Ferreira had been an advisor to Dean Lombardi and Rob Blake in recent years.

On the Minnesota Wild …

Elliotte Friedman: Jeff Marek recently reported that Ferreira could be joining Paul Fenton in Minnesota.

On the Philadelphia Flyers …

Dave Isaac: Flyers GM Ron Hextall said that defensive prospect Samuel Morin is “probably out until February.” Morin tore his ACL in his right knee and will likely require surgery.

On the San Jose Sharks …

Pierre LeBrun: Evander Kane‘s new deal contains a modified no-trade clause where he picks three teams that he’d accept a trade to.

Matthew Sekeres: Kane doesn’t have a no-movement clause. Can’t see many players receiving NMCs in new contracts over the next couple years due to the Seattle expansion draft. NTCs don’t have to be protected, NMCs do.

On the Tampa Bay Lightning …

Joe Smith: Forward Ryan Callahan said that he’ll be having shoulder surgery this offseason and he’s unsure of the timetable.

Bryan Burns: Callahan said he first injured his shoulder in Arizona during the regular season and re-aggravated it several times down the stretch and in the playoffs.

On the Vegas Golden Knights …

Chris Maathuis: “New numbers in the Western Conference Final averaged 1.766 million viewers, making it the best WCF in three years and the best series not involving the Chicago Blackhawks in 16 years.”
