Penguins acquire rights to a defenseman

Pittsburgh Penguins: The Penguins acquired defenseman John Marino from the Edmonton Oilers for a conditional 2021 6th round pick.

Edmonton Oilers: The condition is if Marino sign an entry-level deal with the Penguins before the start of 2021 or if the Penguins trade Marino’s rights before the 2021 draft.

Matt Vensel: Penguins GM Jim Rutherford: “John is a mobile defenseman who excels at moving the puck while also playing with an edge to his game. We are excited to acquire him as we continue to add defensive depth to the organization. The next step is to work on getting a contract done with him.”

No rush to re-sign Pettersson … Penguins over the cap ceiling

Dave Molinari of DK Pittsburgh Sports: Defenseman Marcus Pettersson is the lone remaining restricted free agent for the Pittsburgh Penguins. The Penguins are already over the cap ceiling by $157,000.

“They’ve already hit the salary cap (ceiling), so there’s no money left to do anything with Marcus at the moment,” Wallen said today. “I guess we’re waiting for them to make some room.”

Agent Peter Wallen has been talking with Penguins assistant Jason Karmanos and there is no urgency to get a contract done.

“There’s no rush,” he said. “We have good conversations with management. We’re not in a fight or anything. The communication is good. We know where they are. We know what they want to do.”

Really the only issue for Pettersson is that he’s not able to travel to the U.S. as he won’t be able to get a visa until a contract is done.

Marner likely to miss training camp?

James (@Account4hockey): Renaud Lavoie on Sportsnet 590 on Toronto Maple Leafs restricted free agent forward Mitch Marner: “Marner will likely miss training camp but my understanding is that Marner will be a Maple Leaf for a long time.”

James (@Account4hockey): Lavoie continued: “I believe Mitch Marner will be there for the start of the season, and I think they are leaving cap space to do some other things too.”
