Sakic on restricted free agent defenseman Nikita Zadorov: “close enough that he should be here.” The Avs will retain Zadorov’s rights if he signs in the KHL, something he’s threatened.
Adrian Dater of BSN Denver: Source is saying the Avs and Zadorov remain $500,000 apart on a deal. Zadorov is in Ottawa where his agent, Roland Hedges, is based.

Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: Multiple sources have confirmed that the Detroit Red Wings are getting calls on center Riley Sheahan. The Red Wings are $3 million over the cap ceiling before using LTIR.
The Pittsburgh Penguins are looking for a third-line center and are believed to be one of the teams that have called the Red Wings.
Sheahan carries a $2.075 million salary cap hit, and the Penguins have about $3.28 million in salary cap space.
The Red Wings could be looking for a young defenseman, and the Penguins have Derrick Pouliot, who could use a change of scenery.

Michael Russo of The Athletic Minnesota: Training camp for the Minnesota Wild opens today, and Marcus Foligno remains unsigned. Yesterday both sides continued to work on a three- or four-year deal.
“It is what it is,” Foligno said after leaving the ice following the last of a series of informal skates with his eventual Wild teammates Wednesday. “I just have to wait ‘til the deal gets done, and if I have to miss a day or whatever, I just have to do it. Right now, it’s good to be around the guys, and we’ll see what happens.”
