On the Chicago Blackhawks …
Jay Zawaski: Have been to told that coach Joel Quenneville would like a defensive defenseman and “he’s probably going to get what he wants.”
All is quiet on the Marion Hossa front.
Jay Zawaski: Don’t have any names for potential defensemen.
On the Vegas Golden Knights and Ottawa Senators …
Travis Yost: Over the past couple days trade talk picked up between the Golden Knights and Senators involving Erik Karlsson. A few notes on the Karlsson situation.
1.) The preference to attach Bobby Ryan’s contract to this trade has been well reported at this point. But it’s important to reiterate how much complexity it creates. Teams are increasingly unwilling to part with top-tier prospects while taking on his salary.
2.) If a trade does materialize, it’s probable that one of Shea Theodore or Colin Miller is part of it. Ottawa is in the market for a right shot defender, particularly with Chabot coming up. Miller is a right shot.
3.) A July 1/beyond trade offers different elements. Bobby Ryan has a bonus due. And, David Clarkson’s contract enters the discussion in a salary pass through.
4.) July 1 poses another issue for Ottawa. By then, Ottawa — who absolutely should be taken at their word — will have offered a contract to Karlsson. Belief around the league is that will not be accepted, which is why interested teams are digging in.
5.) But Ottawa could benefit from teams who are in a holding pattern awaiting Tavares’ decision. That would include Tampa Bay. The Bolts have interest (and have been interested for some time). It’s also believed to be a preferred long-term spot for the player.
