On the Calgary Flames …
Wes Gilbertson: Flames GM Brad Treliving on contract extension negotiations with Johnny Gaudreau and Sean Monahan: “Inching along.”
On the New Jersey Devils …
Tom Gulitti: Devils GM Ray Shero said that the Devils will “sit tight” for now. Shero thinks that young players competing for a spot is important.
Tom Gulitti: Shero added that there is no rush to get RFAs Reid Boucher and Reece Scarlett signed, but they will start talking to them in the next week or two.
Andrew Gross: Shero said that if Pavel Zacha proves himself at training camp, there is definitely a roster spot for him.
On the Ottawa Senators …
Ken Warren of the Ottawa Citizen: Mike Hoffman filed for salary arbitration and could be a UFA next offseason if they go for a one-year deal. Senators GM Pierre Dorion does plan on sitting down the Hoffman’s camp soon.
“Probably next week, we’re going to sit down and talk (with Hoffman’s agent),” said Dorion.
“We can negotiate all the way until (the arbitration date). We still have lots of time to do things. Sometimes I feel there’s a sense of panic and we’ve never lost a player going to UFA. And I can’t see us losing a player like this.”
Dorion also has to deal with RFA defenseman Cody Ceci. There has been some talk that Ceci could be a training camp holdout if he doesn’t get a contract that he deems fair.
“We’re going through a lot of scenarios,” said Dorion. “It has taken a bit longer than maybe expected, but that’s the process. For me, again, he’ll be playing for us when the season starts, whether it’s a single-year contract or a multiple-year contract. We’ve done these contracts in the past, whether it was a bridge (a short-term deal bringing a player to unrestricted free agency) and some got done a bit earlier than others. We have lots of time to sign them. They’ll all be playing Oct. 12 against the Maple Leafs.”
