NHL Rumors: Arizona Coyotes, Ottawa Senators, and the New Jersey Devils

Kevin Shattenkirk could be the New Jersey Devils top free agent target
On the Arizona Coyotes …

Craig Morgan: Coyotes GM John Chayka said after the draft that he’d create a “real small group” of candidates for their vacant head coaching position – list may have only three names.

On the Ottawa Senators …

The Senators signed Mike Condon to a three-year deal worth $7.2 million, a $2.4 million cap hit.

Bruce Garrioch: After re-signing Condon, the Senators are expected to increase their efforts in trying to trade Andrew Hammond.

On Jordan Weal

Sam Carchidi: 12 teams have shown interest in free agent Jordan Weal.

On the New Jersey Devils

Jimmy Murphy: Talk yesterday was that the Devils are expected to be one of the finalists for defenseman Kevin Shattenkirk.

Andrew Gross of The Record: Looking at three free agent targets for the New Jersey Devils.

1. Kevin Shattenkirk  – the top dman on the market. Right-handed puck-moving defenseman who is looking for top fairing minutes. Shattenkirk is exactly what the Devils need but he’d be costly – a seven year deal likely around $45 million.

2. Thomas Vanek – Left Winger – The 33-year old can still be a productive winger and could fit into their top-six. They may be able to get him on a one-year deal around the $1.5 million he make last season.

3. Cody Franson – could be a fallback if they are unable to lure Shattenkirk to New Jersey. Still has a big shot and can run the power play. He’s not an ideal top-pairing guy but is right-handed and has a big of an edge to his game.

Chris Ryan of NJ.com: The Devils could use at least one more defenseman. Going big would be Kevin Shattenkirk or they could find a cheaper free agent.

The Devils are likely to get Beau Bennett signed to a contract soon. The Devils have to make decisions on free agents Keith Kinkaid and Jacob Josefson.
