On the Dallas Stars …
- Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News: Stars GM Jim Nill is a little leery of going all-in for veterans leading up to the trade deadline.
“We are open to a hockey trade that can help our team, and we are certainly going to be aware of the players available,” Nill said of his preparation. “But I think you have to be very careful about trading long-term assets for short-term solutions.”
Teams will be looking at the Stars young forwards and defensemen. They have young NHL roster defensemen in Patrik Nemeth, Jamie Oleksiak and Jyrki Jokipakka, and prospects in Esa Lindell and Stephen Johns. They have young roster forwards in Mattias Janmark and Valeri Nichushkin, and prospects in Radek Faksa, Curtis McKenzie, Brett Ritchie, Jason Dickinson and Devin Shore.
“I think if you look at what we have here and you look at the depth we have in the American League, we’re in good shape,” he said. “I think if you look at any of the rentals, you have to ask yourself if we have a solution in house that is just as good or better.”
Nill said he doesn’t plan on re-signing any of their pending UFAs during the season: Alex Goligoski, Jason Demers, Jordie Benn, Vernon Fiddler, Patrick Eaves, Colton Sceviour and Travis Moen.
