NHL Rumors: Detroit Red Wings – Howard, Kronwall, Blashill and Holland

The Detroit Red Wings looking to sign Jimmy Howard for another two years. Niklas Kronwall may want to play another season.
Some extensions could be on the way for a couple Red Wings and coach

Ansar Khan of MLive: The Detroit Red Wings are hoping to bring the soon to be 35-year-old goaltender Jimmy Howard back for another two seasons.

He’s played well this season on the whole and gives them a chance to win most nights.

A deal is expected to be reached before he becomes a free agent.

Ansar Khan of MLive: It’s sounding like Detroit Red Wings coach Jeff Blashill could be getting an extension before his contract expires after the season.

“Also, I’m big on experience. It’s his fourth year in the National Hockey League and there’s no doubt he’s a better coach today than he was four years ago just by the experience of getting to know the National Hockey League and the types of players it takes to play in this league and the way you want to build a team. I’ll sit down with him, but I think he’s done a real good job.”

GM Ken Holland has a year left on his deal but there has been speculation of a Steve Yzerman return to the organization to take over. Holland isn’t too worried about it.

“I’m not worried about my future. I’m sure my wife’s not worried about my future. I’m in a good place, no matter what happens.”

There wasn’t really a market for goaltenders yesterday.

Holland will be sitting down Jimmy Howard’s reps soon.

“We basically agreed we’d get to the trade deadline and see if anybody was looking for a goaltender,” Holland said. “I’ll sit down with (Howard’s agent) in the next week or two.”

The Toronto Maple Leafs and Columbus Blue Jackets kicked tires on defenseman Niklas Kronwall but he may not have wanted to leave.

Holland on if Kronwall will be coming back for another season

“I think he has another season in him if he wants to have another season in him,” Holland said. “As I’ve dealt with older players through the years, a lot about it is about the fire they’ve got.”
