NHL Rumors: Red Wings and Kronwall … Stars and Zuccarello

Niklas Kronwall wanted to remain with the Detroit Red Wings and remains unsure about playing another season.
Kronwall still undecided on his future but happy to remain with the Wings

Ted Kulfan of the Detroit News: Detroit Red Wings defenseman Niklas Kronwall lost a good friend in Gustav Nyquist at the trade deadline as the Wings moved him to San Jose.

Kronwall had met with Red Wings GM Ken Holland before the trade deadline and told him he wanted to stay with the team for the rest of the year.

The Toronto Maple Leafs and Columbus Blue Jackets had reportedly shown some interest in acquiring Kronwall.

“It’s flattering; I didn’t really see that happening,” said Kronwall of other teams being interested at the trade deadline. “Definitely flattering. But I had a conversation with Kenny a few weeks ago and he asked me how I felt and I told him where I stood and how I felt.

“I told him this means – this is more to me than just hockey – being part of the Red Wings for all these years. It’s something few people get the chance to be part of and I’m extremely grateful for that chance.”

Kronwall doesn’t know yet if he’s going to retire or if he has at least one more season in him.

“We’ll sit down after the year and go from there,” Kronwall said.

Zuccarello will let things play out for now

Mike Heika of NHL.com: Dallas Stars pending free agent forward Mats Zuccarello will let things play out before he decides to sign any extension with the Stars or to test free agency. Last offseason Zuccarello thought his days with the Rangers could have been numbers.

“I kind of knew this summer almost that it was going to happen. But when you get closer and closer to it, it becomes a reality,” he said. “I think I was kind of – not sulking, but I was sad about it for a long time, even before it happened. So when it really happened, it was almost like I had a tough time for a while and it was almost like you could let your shoulders down and relax. Now that it happened, nothing you can do about it. Just go and have fun.”
