On the Edmonton Oilers, Ottawa Senators, and the Vegas Golden Knights …
Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: The Edmonton Oilers need a right-handed defenseman and a top-six right winger. The Oilers have called the Senators about defenseman Erik Karlsson, who no longer wants to be in Ottawa.
A Leon Draisaitl for Karlsson deal doesn’t make sense because of the money owed to Draisaitl and the way the Senators operate. The Senators are looking for multiple pieces as well to help with their rebuild.
Trading for Karlsson is a long-shot for the Oilers, with the Vegas Golden Knights making more sense. The Golden Knights could offer up Alex Tuch and Shea Theodore in a deal.
If the Senators add Bobby Ryan‘s $7.25 million cap hit to any Karlsson trade, the value obviously comes down.
The Senators could look at Oscar Klefbom or Darnell Nurse, the No. 10 pick in the draft, and a prospect.
If acquiring Karlsson and his potential contract extension, the Oilers would need to move out salary as they’d have too much money tied up into a few players.
Matheson doesn’t see the Oilers wanting to give up Kailer Yamamoto in a deal.
On the Ottawa Senators …
Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: Pending UFA Chris Wideman said on the weekend that he’d like to re-sign with the Senators, but he’s not sure it will happen.
Wideman’s agent has spoken with GM Pierre Dorion, but Dorion said they have some other decisions to make before circling back to Wideman.
The Senators also need to decide if they will send defenseman Fredrik Claesson a qualifying offer or let him become a UFA.
Wideman has received cleared full medical clearance from hamstring surgery he had back in December.
