Oilers GM search

Chris Nichols of Nichols on Hockey: Darren Dreger on TSN 1260 on the Edmonton Oilers GM search which is entering the “next phase.”

“I expect that the timeline is probably the next 10-14 days where Nicholson starts to finally reach out, seek permission, from some of the candidates, and there could be as many as 10 on this list.”

Names that will be on the list could include Kelly McCrimmon, Dave Nonis, Keith Gretzky, Sean Burke, Mike Futa and Mark Hunter. Dreger notes that the Oilers may not get permission to speak with all their candidates.

Seattle GM candidate

TSN: Pierre LeBrun said on TSN Insider Trading that Seattle has Vegas Golden Knights assistant GM Kelly McCrimmon near the top of their GM list.

“I can tell you who doesn’t mind the fact that Kelly McCrimmon is off limits until the off-season – that would be the league’s 32nd team. Kelly McCrimmon is near the top of that list for the expansion team in Seattle and while Seattle hasn’t officially decided that they’re going to hire their first GM this summer that’s where they are leaning. They will want to talk to Kelly McCrimmon and that appointment would be two years before puck drop in 2021-22 for the Seattle team.”

GM meetings

TSN: The GM meetings are taking place now. Pierre LeBrun said that Columbus Blue Jacket GM Jarmo Kekalainen is going to propose changing a three-on-three OT minor penalty to one minute and not the standard two.

Dreger notes that there is a slim possibility of additional video review for five-minute major penalties. The review would give the referees a look to make sure that it should be a major penalty. It has been talked about in the small groups, but not in the large group and it may not be introduced anytime soon.
