Focusing on Gustav Nyquist…
Ted Kulfan of The Detroit News: Business is just business when it comes to the Nyquist front. Ken Holland has made it known that he needs assets to rebuild.
However, he understands this market is not last year’s. With supply and demand set up the way it is, not all of Detroit’s rentals will get moved. Gustav Nyquist may not either. It remains far from automatic. The playmaking winger is firmly entrenched in that second tier of players after the primary ones are gone.
Could Nyquist fetch a good return? It is entirely possible.
Ansar Khan of mlive.com: Gustav Nyquist makes no secret he feels he merits a raise from his $4.75 million salary. How much of one is something he will not dwell on? He has 15 goals and 33 assists while on pace for 60+ points. Jeff Blashill praised Nyquist’s focus.
“I think he’s competed on a consistent basis,” Blashill said. “he’s created offense. I think he’s back to creating space for himself with his smarts and his ability to use his edges.
Alas, this comes down to return in a trade. What does Ken Holland prefer? That determines whether Nyquist gets moved more than anything.
Detroit Red Wings mulling options…
Ansar Khan of mlive.com: The focus of Detroit’s trade deadline appears to be on three players — Gustav Nyquist, Nick Jensen, and Jimmy Howard. Detroit stockpiled 31 picks between 2017 and 2019. That may explain why Detroit could be reluctant to trade unless the offer is just right.
Howard becomes the one player most likely to re-sign with Detroit no matter what happens. Detroit needs a goalie next year it can trust and has nothing imminent in their system.
Jensen fetching a second or third-round pick would be high and that would force a decision.
The expectation is that Detroit wants a player for Nyquist as opposed to another pick.
Ken Holland understands a better product needs to be on the ice and this trade deadline could aid in that. This depends on if Holland plays his trade chips correctly.
