Potential goaltending options for Calgary Flames
Rory Boylen of Sportsnet: The Calgary Flames have been having some issues in net but the goaltender trade market may be a little thin. A look at some potential goaltending options for the Flames from an Elliotte Friedman interview on Sportsnet 960.
Sergei Bobrovsky – Columbus Blue Jackets – Elliotte Friedman noted that Bobrovsky may not want to go to Calgary.
Cory Schneider – New Jersey Devils – Only played in 40 games and has struggled in limited games this season. He carries a $6 million salary cap beyond this season. He could regain his old form but run the risk of him not turning it around.
Jimmy Howard – Detroit Red Wings – A pending UFA that is off to a good start. There are rumors that he’s interested in re-signing with the Red Wings.
“That’s the one guy I looked at,” Friedman said. “If you really go up and down the teams and look at who’s really available and who can be had out there, he’s probably your best option. There has been rumours, and I stress they are rumours, that he was looking at signing a short-term extension with the Red Wings, but that doesn’t necessarily mean anything.”
Jaroslav Halak – Boston Bruins – Halak is basically the Bruins No. 1 goaltender at the moment as Tuukka Rask struggles. If Rask wasn’t struggling, Friedman thinks someone might be able to pry Halak out of Boston.
Charlie Lindgren – Montreal Canadiens – No shot of Lindgren being a starter in Montreal as long as Carey Price is there. The cost to acquire the 24-year old Lindgren may not be cheap.
Ryan Miller – Anaheim Ducks – Miller has a no-trade clause and has family ties to the West coast. The Ducks are still hoping for the playoffs and likely not thinking about moving a goaltender.
Craig Anderson – Ottawa Senators – Has another season at $4.75 million. In the offseason showed some desire to be traded if things in the organization weren’t cleaned up. The Senators don’t really have someone to take over as a No. 1 and they don’t want to tank since they owe the Avalanche their first-round pick.
Canadiens could be looking to move a defenseman
Mike Johnston of Sportsnet: The Montreal Canadiens have eight defensmen on their roster and could be looking to move one – Jeff Petry, Jordie Benn, David Schlemko, Noah Juulsen, Xavier Ouellet, Victor Mete, Mike Reilly and Karl Alzner.
“Earlier this year, Marc Bergevin tried to make a move when he had forwards coming back ,” Friedman said. “He didn’t. They couldn’t. They lost Jacob De La Rose on waivers. With Shea Weber getting closer I think they’re trying similar defensively to see if there’s a body they can move out for the logjam.”
