No urgency for the Rangers and Trouba yet
Larry Brooks of The NY Post: Jacob Trouba‘s arbitration date is set for July 25th and it seems that it would be a surprise if it got that far.
It seems unlikely that they’d settle on a one-year deal as it would take him to unrestricted free agency.
Seven years is the max Trouba can sign for, but in theory, they could get him eventually locked in for nine seasons.
They could go to arbitration and take a one year deal, and then after the trade deadline, they are eligible to do the max eight years. For circumvention rules, they can’t talk or agree to this though. This route could net Trouba an extra $15 million. The cap number could end up being a little lower than comparable in the $7.75 million range.
Could be risky for Trouba as his value may change, and the Rangers could theoretically trade him at the deadline before any extension is in place.
Talks currently aren’t in the urgent stage but that could change closer to the arbitration date.
Two RFAs left for the Flyers
Adam Kimelman of NHL.com: The Philadelphia Flyers continue to work on contract for restricted free agents Ivan Provorov and Travis Konecny. They are the last two things on GM Chuck Fletcher’s offseason to-do list.
“That’s the biggest challenge we have right now,” Fletcher said. “Looking at a lot of teams around the League, it looks like there’s several teams dealing with the same situation. We’ll continue to focus on that and get these players signed as quickly as we can.
“I expect that as the summer goes on we’ll continue to chip away at this and the market will continue to flush out as we go. We’ll get there by the end.”
There are several other RFA defenseman that haven’t signed either – Jacob Trouba, Zach Werenski, Charlie McAvoy and Will Butcher – and that could be slowing down discussions.
Fletcher said talks with Provorov’s camp have been amicable and that talks with Konecny’s camp have been good to date.
