Nygard deciding between the Oilers and Flames?
Uffe Bodin: It is sounding like it is down to the Edmonton Oilers and Calgary Flames for Swedish free agent forward Joakim Nygard.
He is expected to make a decision soon.
Mark Spector: “The 26-year-old LW scored 21 goals for Farjestads last season. He would find a deeper roster, closer to winning in Calgary, but more offensive centres, likely more immediate Top 6 opportunity in Edmonton.”
One free agent for the Oilers should be…
Jim Matheson: The Edmonton Oilers should be interested in Vegas Golden Knights unrestricted free agent AHL winger Daniel Carr.
Carr recorded 79 points in 60 AHL games and would have won the scoring race had he not injured his shoulder.
Callahan knows his days could be numbered in Tampa
Joe Smith of The Athletic: Ryan Callahan has a year left on his deal at a $5.8 million salary cap hit. His role with the Tampa Bay Lightning diminished this year and he was a regular healthy scratch. He knows his days could be numbered in Tampa.
“Obviously there’s a salary cap crunch, and it doesn’t take a scientist to figure out right now I’m on the outside looking in,” Callahan told The Athletic. “Whatever happens, happens. But I was really happy with how I finished the year.”
The Lightning would likely need to sweeten the pot with a draft pick or prospect for someone to take on his contract.
A buyout is another option.
Callahan’s agent said early this week that he hasn’t spoken with the Lightning about any potential plans. Agent Stephen Bartlett added that they’ll need to submit their 15-team trade list by next month.
A top prospect won’t have to be included, but potentially someone like Mitchell Stephens, Boris Katchouk or Taylor Raddysh. Others options could be Carter Verhaeghe, Alex-Barre Boulet or Connor Ingram.
Potential teams that could be willing/able to take on his salary include the New Jersey Devils, Buffalo Sabres, Detroit Red Wings, Montreal Canadiens, and New York Rangers.
