Karlsson will decide on Sharks or free agency soon

Sportsnet: Pending unrestricted free agent defenseman Erik Karlsson should make a decision in the next week or so if he’s going to re-sign with the San Jose Sharks or test free agency according to Elliotte Friedman.

“The word is that Erik Karlsson is taking a long, hard look at deciding if he wants to stay in San Jose,” said Friedman during the ‘Headlines’ segment on Hockey Night in Canada. “And I think we’re going to know, in about a week, if he’s going to stay or if he’s going to investigate his other free agency options.

“He wants to win, the Sharks are perennially in it they’ve made a good impression on him.”

Kings thinking about buying out Phaneuf?

Sportsnet: Nick Kypreos said on Headlines last night that the Los Angeles Kings could be considering buying out

“Other options that the L.A. Kings have is buying out Dion Phaneuf,” said Kypreos during the ‘Headlines’ segment of Hockey Night in Canada on Saturday. “He’s got two years left at $12 million. That would get him $8 million over the next four years and a chance to get back into unrestricted free agency on July 1.”

Significant changes aren’t coming to the Flames, but some moves could happen

Eric Francis of Sportsnet: A Q&A with Calgary Flames GM Brad Treliving. When asked about a coaching change or making a significant trade, Treliving said he’s not going to change any of their young core players.

“We’re looking to make some improvements in our team as we do every year, but we’re not out there saying we have to turn over this roster.

It’s not just about changing the faces. We have to work with some people to help change their games a little bit.”

Treliving said their top priority is to get some of their players re-signed – RFAs Matthew Tkachuk, Sam Bennett and David Rittich.

There are areas with the team they’d like to improve on, but Treliving doesn’t want everyone to know what they are.

They’d like to get Tkachuk signed as soon as possible, but realize that it can take time.

When asked about the trade speculation involving T.J. Brodie and/or Michael Frolik, Treliving said:

“I’m not going to make any predictions like that — we’re trying to find ways to help our team.”
