Panthers can spend at the deadline and are looking at defenseman …

Bob McKenzie: The Washington Capitals have already added some depth to their blue line and don’t have a lot of salary cap space. The Florida Panthers may not be looking to do something major .. but both have called on some notable veteran defensemen. Some of those defensemen have term left, some don’t.

Isabelle Khurshudyan: Was informed earlier last night that the Capitals weren’t planning to do anything big, but you can’t doubt a report from McKenzie.

Elliotte Friedman: The Panthers are showing serious interest in Rangers defenseman Ryan McDonagh.

John Shannon: Hearing that the Panthers and Tampa Bay Lightning are interested in McDonagh.

George Richards: Have been told that the Panthers ownership have given GM Dale Tallon the green light to make a move and spend some money at the deadline to take a run at the playoffs.

Sharks ask Ward for his no-trade list …

Darren Dreger: The San Jose Sharks have asked forward Joel Ward for his no-trade list. Ward is able to block a trade to six teams. He has 24 hours to submit the list.

David Pagnotta: Ward and his agent were to go over their options last night. They’ll submit the no-trade list late this morning.

A third for Cole …

Bob McKenzie: After Kempny and Davidson went for third-round picks, the Senators are also believed to be looking for a third-round pick for Ian Cole.

Penguins should be looking for a defenseman …

Jason Mackey: Penguins should be looking a defenseman. There is a big drop off from Ian Cole to Matt Hunwick.
