The Maple Leafs would need the Devils to retain money on Dougie Hamilton, and trading Ondrej Palat isn’t easy
Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic: New Jersey Devils defenseman Dougie Hamilton has two years left on his contract at a $9 million cap hit. There is some hope a trade can be found before the Olympic trade freeze on February 4th.
The Carolina Hurricanes and Toronto Maple Leafs could be potential fits. The Leafs have been looking for a right-handed defenseman with Chris Tanev out. The Leafs would need the Devils to retain salary.
The Devils are also looking to trade Ondrej Palat, who carries a $6 million cap hit for one more season. Palat has a 10-team trade list, so it’s not an easy deal to make.
NHL Rumors: The Toronto Maple Leafs are Looking for D
Do they become ‘own rentals’ or do they get moved despite their teams still in the playoff race?
Matt Larkin of Daily Faceoff: There are numerous teams that are still in the playoff hunt that have pending UFAs that they might have to keep a hold of, and use as an ‘own rental’ and possibly lose for nothing. Some pending UFAs who could be moved.
Charlie Coyle – C – Columbus Blue Jackets – Carries a $5.25 million cap hit but is having a good season and has plenty of playoff experience.
Mario Ferraro – D – San Jose Sharks – He’s a middle to bottom pair guy. They’re still rebuilding, but he’s a leader on the team, and they’re still in the hunt.
Radko Gudas – D – Anaheim Ducks – He’s 36 years old, and the Ducks went on a downward spiral. If the freefall continues, they might consider it.
Boone Jenner – C – Columbus Blue Jackets – Can be a second-line center, and should be able to bring a good return given all that he brings.
Scott Laughton – C – Toronto Maple Leafs – Looking like the player of old of late after the Leafs paid a big price for him at the deadline last year. If the Leafs fall out, teams could come calling, along with winger Bobby McMann.
Jean-Gabriel Pageau – C – New York Islanders – The Islanders have played better than many expected and they may not be able to move him, like they may have originally thought. Pageau, and Anders Lee, are looking like own rentals.
Artemi Panarin – LW – New York Rangers – Could land the Rangers a first, a top prospect, and maybe a young player. There’s still time for the Rangers to get back in the race. They have the players.
Nick Schmaltz – RW – Utah Mammoth – The sides aren’t close to an extension. The Mammoth are right there, so trading isn’t an easy decision.
Alex Tuch – RW – Buffalo Sabres – A huge decision. The Sabres are in a playoff spot, and have missed 14 consecutive seasons. He’s looking for a big contract, but the return could be huge as well.
NHL Rumors: What’s Next for the Calgary Flames?
Jacob Trouba – D – Anaheim Ducks – Would land a bigger return than teammate Gudas. Has a 12-team no-trade list, but it sounds like he’s enjoyed it out in Anaheim and might consider re-signing.
