Matthews extension with Maple Leafs appears imminent
Update: Kristen Shilton: #Leafs have signed Auston Matthews to a five-year contract extension, with an AAV of $11.634 million.”
Chris Johnston: 93 percent of Matthews contract will be money paid out in signing bonuses.
Pierre LeBrun: Auston Matthews extension is done and should be announced today – a five-year deal believed to be between $11.5 and $11.7 million per.
Bob McKenzie: A contract extension between the Toronto Maple Leafs and Auston Matthews appears to be imminent. It is projected to be a five-year contract with a salary cap hit of $11.5 million – give or take $100,000 or $200,000.
Cap Friendly: “$11.5M AAV would represent 14.46% of the cap based on the current 2018-19 ceiling of $79.5M.
That would give Matthews the sixth highest cap hit% at signing behind Ovechkin 16.8%, McDavid 16.7%, Toews/Kane 15.2%, and Malkin 14.8%.”
Cap Friendly: “As correctly pointed out by @SteveBurtch, the contracts captured below only take into account active contracts. For example, Sidney Crosby signed a 5 year deal in 2008 coming out of his ELC that carried an AAV of $8.7M, which at the time represented a cap hit% at signing of 17.3%”
Andy Piluk: Nick Kypreos reported that Matthews asking price for an eight-year contract was between $15 and $16 million.

Marner still wanting to focus on the season
Terry Koshan: With is sounding like Matthews extension being close to completion, Mitch Marner‘s agent Darren Ferris said they are still thinking about waiting until after the season for serious contract negotiations to take place. It is possible that things could change though.
Ferris: “The whole purpose is for Mitch to focus on the year. I want his mind clear. There is lots of time for a contract.”
Draglikepull: McKenzie was speculating that the Maple Leafs are trying to keep Mitch Marner under $10 million a season, and may need to go on a shorter term to get the number there.
