The Devils couldn’t match the Wild’s offer, and their forward search continues

Peter Baugh of The Athletic: The New Jersey Devils were in on Quinn Hughes trade talks and they felt they made a strong offer, according to a source. It’s not known exactly what was offered, but something comparable would have been Simon Nemec, Dawson Mercer, a prospect and a first. The Wild’s offer was better and they didn’t have to move out salary first.

The only way the Devils would have been comparable to the Wild’s offer if they included either Jesper Bratt or Nico Hischier. Non-starters for the Devils.

The Devils have been talking to other teams to see what they can do, especially up front. Cap space and trade protection is making things difficult. Nashville Predators center Ryan O’Reilly would be nice, but the asking price isn’t going to come down between now and the deadline.

Does the Quinn Hughes trade make the Canucks better this season and lower their draft pick?

Sekeres and Price: Blake Price thinks the Quinn Hughes trade makes them better now and may take a potential top-five pick in the 2026 NHL draft and into the top 10 range.

“My worry here is, and I think this return is middling for me. I know that Matt, in particular, is probably more glowing on the return here. I’ll call it middling, but if you tell me they also pick in the top three or top five this year, my review in this trade gets better.

But my worry here is, this trade makes them better right now, it does. And …”

Matt Sekeres: “Yeah.”

NHL Rumors: Around US Thanksgiving, Quinn Hughes Told the Canucks he Wouldn’t Extend

Price “… if it makes them too good right now, them get, getting this haul back, which I think is fine, lowercase, f fine, and they pick ninth this year. I am a lot less excited about what’s been accomplished over the course of this season for the Vancouver Canucks.”
