NHL Rumors: New York Rangers and the Dallas Stars

Derek Stepan and Kevin Shattenkirk

On the New York Rangers …

Steve Zipay of Newsday:  The NY Rangers have been looking for a top pairing, right handed defenseman. Names that continue to be in the rumor mill include Jacob Trouba, Tyson Barrie, Justin Faulk and UFA Kevin Shattenkirk.

Shattenkirk would cost the most from a salary and term perspective, with the others costing an asset(s).

Two sources saying that Derek Stepan‘s name has been coming up. Stepan has four years left on his deal at a $6.5 million cap hit and a no-trade clause that kicks in on July 1st. Moving a center like Stepan is risky as they they only have Mika Zibanejad, Kevin Hayes and Oscar Lindberg down the middle.

On the Dallas Stars …

Sean Shapiro of Wrong Side Of The Redline: (mailbag) The Stars could use their No. 3 and No. 29 picks in the draft for a player that could help them next season.

Think that Dan Hamhuis could be selected by Vegas if he’s left exposed. He could be a trade asset for Vegas at the trade deadline.

Don’t think Chris Tanev fits with the Stars as they have John Klingberg, Stephen Johns and Julius Honka on the right side.

Potential defenseman trade target for the Stars … Go big and try to get Oliver Ekman-Larsson with No. 3 as part of the deal. Jame Muzzin and could cost the No. 3 as well so might as well try for OEL. Jonas Brodin or Matt Dumba are more realistic options. Marc Methot, but he’s 31-years old and should target someone younger. Sami Vatanen is another intriguing player.

May take Jamie Oleksiak and a pick to the Ducks for Vatanen.

Of Brodin, Vatanen and Tanev .. Brodin may be the best fit for the Stars. Would propose the following to the Wild. *** Shapiro proposal and not a rumor or being reported anywhere ***

Minnesota receives:
-Pick No. 29 in the 2017 NHL Entry Draft
-Second round pick in the 2018 NHL Entry Draft
Devin Shore
Antti Niemi with 50 percent retained salary.

Dallas receives:
-Jonas Brodin
-Prospect Jordan Greenway

The Stars would like to have their assistant coaches named by the end of June.

Think that Alex Radulov would be a better fit with the Stars than Alex Galchenyuk. They are already deep down the middle and on the left side.
