On the New York Rangers …
Larry Brooks of the NY Post: If 2017 first round draft pick Filip Chytil doesn’t work out for the Rangers this year, it’s likely that before the trade deadline GM Jeff Gorton will be looking for a veteran rental centerman.
notes that Joe Thornton fits what the Rangers may need, and adds that the Thorton and the Rangers spoke several times during the free agent window when teams could talk with pending free agents.
On the San Jose Sharks …
Kevin Kurz of The Athletic: (mailbag) Asked if the Sharks would make a push for Avs forward Matt Duchene. would imagine that the Sharks at least made an inquiry, but don’t think they could get a deal done without giving up a major player or two from their NHL roster. Guessing it would take at least one of Tomas Hertl or Timo Meier. Young defensemen like Danny O’Regan and Joakim Ryan in a package wouldn’t be enough.
doesn’t see the Sharks making a major move, but if the team struggles early this season, they can’t be patient. The Sharks have about $6 million in salary cap space.
