NHL Rumors: 10 Trade Destinations for Artemi Panarin
Ron MacLean: “Let’s talk headlines and the New York Rangers, starting with Artemi Panarin.”
Elliotte Friedman: “So he’s obviously the name that everybody’s kind of focused on right now. And if you’ll remember, last year, Brock Nelson was traded from the Islanders to Colorado, and the trade was for Cal Richtue, a first-rounder and a conditional third. There are other players involved, but those were the key pieces. And it sounds like that’s where the Rangers starting point is with Panarin right now.
Now, part of this is also, will he be willing to sign an extension? Are there places? He has a no-move clause, so he controls where he goes. But I think some of the teams are wondering, could there be an extension as part of this.
Now, I think some of the teams are looking around Anaheim. Panarin has a history with Joel Quenneville. I think LA has some decisions to make about their overall situation, where they are right now and where they truly are as a franchise, and what an extension would look like.
NHL Rumors: New York Rangers – Panarin, Trocheck, Soucy, Schneider, and Zibanejad
I think Washington with an extension, and I think there’s a bunch of other teams. I’m always conceding Ron, I’m missing teams that are in on this, but I think that’s kind of where the market starts. The trade talk starts, and some of the teams are trying to figure out what Panarin is willing to do.
MacLean: “How can LA know their two points out? Right?”
Friedman: “Like, yeah, but I think you also sometimes have to be honest about where you are and where you’re going. And I think LA this year, they’re kind of looking at, where are we, and where are we going.”
NHLRumors.com Note: Friedman mentions LA on the 32 Thoughts Podcast. This is the second time the Kings have been mentioned. Dennis Bernstein and Dave Pagnotta of the Fourth Period mentioned the Kings as a possible landing spot for Artemi Panarin. The issue is whether the Kings are a playoff team this season and what their direction will be once Anze Kopitar retires.
NHL Rumors: Would the Return for Artemi Panarin be Underwhelming?
Not to mention what the extension looks like. Considering Panarin thinks he can play somewhere between 38 and 39, he could get a four or five-year extension. Friedman guessed on the Podcast it could be four years at $12.5 million a season or five years at $10 million. Who out of the Washington Capitals, Colorado Avalanche, Los Angeles Kings, Anaheim Ducks, and others has the appetite for that?
But Friedman confirmed reports that the New York Rangers are looking to acquire at least three pieces in a trade for Panarin.
