Shawn Hutcheon: Scouts listed to attend last night’s Wild-Bruins game: Winnipeg Jets (2), Carolina Hurricanes, Florida Panthers, Nashville Predators, New York Rangers, Pittsburgh Penguins, Toronto Maple Leafs and the Vancouver Canucks.
Sharks may be in the rental market
Paul Gackle: San Jose Sharks GM Doug Wilson left the door open for a potential trade for a rental at the deadline this year. This is a little different from the usual approach of “a deal that works for now and into the future.”
Paul Gackle: Wilson said that adding a rental would depend on how they play over the next month. He also cautioned against disrupting team chemistry.
Paul Gackle: Wilson adds that they have full confidence in their goaltending and adds “look at their history.. we’ve seen Jones in the playoffs.”
On the Colorado Avalanche
Adrian Dater: “They are not going to make any trades for short-term help, i.e. big-name rentals or anything. Maybe they can steal someone in a deal that makes it seem bigger than thought, but forget about any dealing of picks-prospects”
Edler hasn’t been asked to waive his NTC and he wants to stay
Ben Kuzma of the Vancouver Province: The Canucks could look to re-sign 32-year old defenseman Alex Edler, or they could ask him to waive his no-trade clause and see if they could get a draft pick or prospect for him at the deadline. If they traded him, they could always look to re-sign at the start of free agency.
“Internally, we’re going to be meeting this week with our hockey operations group and we’re going to talk about it some more and then act upon it,” said Benning. “We’re going to look at all of our options. He (Edler) has been a part of the organization for a long time and I know he wants to continue on.”
Benning adds that if they were to move him, do they have anyone that could replace him?
Edler continues to say he would like to remain with the Canucks as there are no guarantees elsewhere.
“If I could pick any team I wanted today, there’s no guarantees,” Edler stressed. “It’s such a competitive league and I think it’s pretty exciting with the change here. We had a great team and it’s been a rebuild and we’re on our way up. I think it would be good to be a part of that.
“I like it here and I’ve been treated well and like the city.”
He hasn’t been asked by the Canucks to waive his no-trade clause but knows that it could happen.
