NHL Rumors: Sharks, Oilers, Flyers, Flames, Canucks and Maple Leafs

The Toronto Maple Leafs could be one team interested in UFA Kris Russell
On the San Jose Sharks …

Kevin Kurz of CSN Bay Area: There is nothing new to report and will likely be quiet until after the expansion draft with regards to free agents Joe Thornton and Patrick Marleau.

The Sharks are still deciding if they want to bring one or both back, and at what cost are they willing to go to. Thornton and Marleau will likely have other options.

Potential landing spots for Joe Thornton – Nashville Predators, Dallas Stars and Boston Bruins.

Potential landing spots for Patrick Marleau – Anaheim Ducks, Vegas Golden Knights and Toronto Maple Leafs.

On the Edmonton Oilers and Philadelphia Flyers …

Jim Matheson: Though there may be another team that college free agent Spencer Foo is eyeing, he’s likely to sign with either the Oilers or Flyers.

On the Edmonton Oilers …

Jim Matheson: Teams are scrambling to set up trades with the Vegas Golden Knights, the Oilers are in the “ho-hum mode” and there is no need to worry.

Dave Isaac: (responding to Matheson) Unless the Flyers trade a forward, they may not have room for him on their NHL roster.

On free agent defenseman Kris Russell

David Staples of the Edmonton Journal: Mark Spector was Oilers Now and was talking about Oilers free agent defenseman Kris Russell. Spector thinks he is a $4 million a year defenseman now on maybe a three year deal.

Spector adds that the Calgary Flames and Vancouver Canucks could offer him more. The Toronto Maple Leafs are interested. There may be enough teams out there interested that a short-term deal is not possible.

“I’ve been hearing Toronto is interested in Russell as well because he’s the kind of guy that can play for (Toronto coach Mike) Babcock. Listen, we all watched him in the playoffs. Corsi be damned and all this other stuff. Everyone listening to this show saw his value with their own two eyes all through last season and the playoffs. So did everyone else in the NHL.”
