NHL Rumors: Edmonton Oilers and Montreal Canadiens

Taylor Hall of the Edmonton Oilers and P.K. Subban of the Montreal Canadiens
On the Taylor Hall and P.K. Subban …

David Staples of the Edmonton Journal: Marc Antoine Godin of La Presse was on Oilers Now with Bob Stauffer on CHED radio. Stauffer brings up the Oilers and P.K. Subban. Godin wouldn’t rule out Canadiens GM Marc Bergevin trading Subban.

At his end of season press conference, Bergevin said he didn’t intend to trade Subban, but will have to listen to whatever is presented to him.

“He really stopped short on saying he would not trade P.K. Subban,” said Godin. “And the signals over the years, it seems there’s enough smoke to create a fire.  So as we speak, I’m not saying he’s going to be traded, but I’m concerned that it might end up the case.”

Subban’s no-movement clause kicks in on July 1st this year.

“That’s why it’s time sensitive,” Godin said. “If there’s something to be done it has to be done in the next couple months. That’s why it’s intriguing.”

Godin said that Canadiens would want Taylor Hall in any Subban trade, and would need a defenseman to fill the hole left by moving Subban.

Godin mentions Oscar Klefbom: “He’s probably the sort of guy that might be thrown in.”

Staples adds that he can’t see the Oilers including Klefbom, maybe Griffin Reinhart.

Chris Nichols of Today’s Slapshot: Darren Dreger on TSN 690 radio on Godin’s mention of an Oilers-Canadiens trade involving Taylor Hall, Oscar Klefbom and P.K. Subban.

“I think Marc Bergevin made it pretty clear that he had no intention of trading P.K. Subban. But if a deal like that were to materialize – and capitalizing ‘IF’ doesn’t even apply here. Because let’s look at it from both sides.

“Of course the Montreal Canadiens would consider a deal like that. But look at what the Edmonton Oilers are giving up here. P.K. Subban is a great player. He’s not Bobby Orr. And Taylor Hall is a magnificent piece. He’s not untouchable in Edmonton, but he’s close to untouchable. Connor McDavid is the only untouchable.

“And when Pete Chiarelli was talking with the New York Islanders about Travis Hamonic, he had no interest in including Oscar Klefbom as part of a trade scenario. So you’re going to give up Taylor Hall andOscar Klefbom for P.K. Subban? I mean, this is just media fodder.”
