Not Much of a Seller’s Market

Dave Pagnotta of the Fourth Period joined Sirius XM NHL Network Radio with Gord Stellick and Scott Laughlin. He was asked about the quiet trade market and whether anything would be happening, or whether too many teams think they are still in it to make a move.

NHL Rumors: The Ottawa Senators Could be Looking to Make a Big Move

Gord Stellick: “So it’s interesting, one thing we were just kidding off air about, are there going to be any deals made? And we don’t know. Now, all of a sudden, what a week for the Calgary Flames? I don’t know if any team was looking to do one. They’re sliding the wrong way to do it there – a bit of a selling thing versus teams that are suffering some injuries.

Everyone’s in the thick of things, like it is so close, so it’s hard to get something tangible. (Andrei) Svechnikov was another interesting little note out there on Saturday. Whether something happens or not remains to be seen, but you get the sense things are really percolating yet are still pretty quiet.”

Dave Pagnotta: “It’s oddly enough Gord, it’s like both like, yes, there are teams, and Calgary’s kind of pumped the brakes a little bit. Three in a row for them, first time this season. But even before yesterday’s (Sunday’s) win, they kind of were telling everybody, yeah, well, we’re going to continue to listen. We’ll have calls, but we’re not ready to do anything just yet. We still want to figure out how this season is going to play out.

St. Louis and Nashville, on the other hand, seem to be kind of open right now. More of a willingness to have these conversations and to make these calls. Coincidentally, the last couple of games, the Predators had two of their scouts, including their head pro scout at Montreal games. And St. Louis, also Peter Chiarelli, their VP of Hockey Operations, to keep an eye on the Habs, too. So maybe a little bit of activity happening there, but outside of the Preds and St. Louis and a couple of conversations here and there, it doesn’t seem like there’s too many pressing items at the moment.

NHL Rumors: The Anaheim Ducks Won’t be Pushed to Trade Pavel Mintyukov

Doesn’t seem like anybody’s; everyone’s out there just itching to make a move again. Toronto would love to do it. The Canadiens are out there. The Oilers continue to kind of poke around. Vancouver is looking. San Jose is looking to do both. They’re looking to add, and at the same time are willing to listen to some of their guys. But it doesn’t seem like anyone’s kind of just rushing to get something done here.

Maybe after Toronto’s loss, maybe that escalates things even further for Brad Treliving. But it’s a semi-status quo in terms of, yes, teams are still having conversations, exploring, and trying to make if something falls into their lap, they’re going to pounce on it.

But it seems like, outside of Nashville and St. Louis, right now, the seller’s market is relatively thin.”
