Toronto Maple Leafs GM Kyle Dubas on Mitch Marner

Terry Koshan: Maple Leafs GM Kyle Dubas on Mitch Marner.

“We continue to talk with Darren and have good dialogue. I know it’s a point of consternation within our fan base and publicly, but Mitch has been excellent throughout and Darren has been excellent, and we just continue to stay in touch.”

Terry Koshan: Dubas continued:

“What we think about Mitch is not up for debate. He is an excellent person first and foremost and an excellent young player. I am optimistic and feel good about where things will go in the future.”

Bridge deal for Marner?

Matt Larkin: On the talk of a two-year, $8 million bridge deal for Mitch Marner – it may not be the worst idea for the Maple Leafs: “You kick the can down the road, gain yourself some wiggle room and, assuming you move Zaitsev, you have space to sign Marner/Kapanen/Johnsson AND pursue an addition on ‘D'”

Dubas on free agency

Terry Koshan: Maple Leafs GM Kyle Dubas on the start of free agency on July 1st.

“We have to save space for Mitch … we all know we’re going to be right tight to the salary cap so we’re trying to do some creative things on the edges with players that perhaps look at this as a legacy opportunity for them or as a chance to rebound.”

Chris Johnston: The Toronto Maple Leafs have spoken with a number of players who potentially could sign for the league minimum or close to it. They are trying to do some value shopping.

Could Marner meet up with the Islanders while in New York?

Maple Leafs Hot Stove: Elliotte Friedman on Sportsnet 590 on possibly Marner’s weekend plans.

“Marner is supposed to be in New York this weekend for Matt Martin’s wedding. I wouldn’t be surprised if he had a meeting there, more with the Islanders than anybody else.”
