Looking like Edler heading to free agency

Rick Dhaliwal: It is not sounding like the Vancouver Canucks and Alex Edler will be getting a new contract done. It’s looking like Edler is headed to free agency.

The Larschcast: Dhaliwal said that from his understanding term is the big issue with Edler and that not being protected in the expansion was okay.

Rick Dhaliwal: Source saying that there is lots of talk in Vancouver about pending free agents Tyler Myers and Jake Gardiner.

Both Myers and Gardiner will have multiple teams interested and could be looking at six-seven years in the $6-$7 million range.

Jason Brough: Believe that the Canuck are looking to make big changes to their blue line. If Edler leaves, can see them trying to sign both Gardiner and Myers. Gardiner and Myers share the same agent

Potential candidates for Lightning’s forward Ryan Callahan

Joe Smith of The Athletic: Tampa Bay Lightning forward Ryan Callahan has a year left at $5.8 million. Callahan knows he could be a casualty of the Lightning’s salary cap crunch. The Lightning have 17 players signed for a combined $74 million.

A sweetener will likely needed to be added to move his contract. Callahan has a 15-team trade list.

Five teams that could be a landing spot for Callahan.

New Jersey Devils – They have the cap space and would gladly take can asset – a high draft pick and Callahan for a late round pick. If looking to expand the deal, J.T. Miller may intrigue the Devils, possibly Tyler Johnson as well.

Buffalo Sabres – Have the cap space and may benefit for some leadership. Could they work out a bigger deal involving Rasmus Ristolainen?

Detroit Red Wings – Wings have the cap space and could use Callahan on their third line. Yzerman brought Callahan to Tampa and knows what prospects they have. Would the Red Wings be interested in one of Mitchell Stephens, Alexander Volkov, Taylor Raddysh, Boris Katchouk, or Carter Verhaeghe?

Montreal Canadiens – Would the Canadiens be interested in Cedric Paquette and would the Lightning be willing to move him?

New York Rangers – Last year the Rangers would have taken Callahan back along with an asset. That may not be the case this year according to Rick Carpiniello?
