The Montreal Canadiens have traded forward Alex Galchenyuk to the Arizona Coyotes for forward Max Domi.
The 24-year old Alex Galchenyuk was drafted 3rd overall in the 2012 draft. He carries a $4.9 million cap hit.
The 23-year old Domi was drafted 12th overall in the 2013 draft by the Coyotes. Domi is an RFA.
Arizona Coyotes: Coyotes GM John Chayka: “Alex is a skilled, productive forward who has scored 30 goals in this league. We’re excited to add another elite young player to our core group moving forward.”
Arizona Coyotes: Chayka: “Max is a talented player and a good person. Montreal will provide him with a fresh start. We wish him all the best in the future.”
Thoughts from the media
Brian Wilde: “You know when the volcano erupts & it surges so fast you can’t get out of the way of the lava fast enough … That’s this trade. Max Domi has regressed for 3 seasons. Galchenyuk I have already written I expect is gonna have a break out year. Sorry Habs fans, this is a hot mess.”
David Pagnotta: “That said, per sources, Galchenyuk camp wasn’t thrilled with way Habs misused him this season. Trade was inevitable, from Habs perspective. Change might be good for both players.”
Eric Engels: “Alex Galchenyuk (24) has produced .61 ppg over his NHL career. Max Domi (23) has produced .60 ppg. Galchenyuk has two years left on his deal at $4.9M. Domi is an RFA.”
Arpon Basu: “I’m still trying to wrap my head around this. Max Domi is an RFA with no arbitration rights, so he should be cheaper than Galchenyuk. So there’s that.”
Matthew DeFranks: “So the price of a 24-year-old 50-point scorer making $5 million the next two seasons is one Max Domi.”
Habs Links: “I like Max Domi but I think the Habs will regret giving up on Alex Galchenyuk… especially not getting a C back in the deal.”
Adam Gretz: “Galchenyuk is only a year older than Domi and 19-goals, 50 points is a disappointing year for him. Max Domi had 18 goals… … In 141 games over the past two years. I don’t know, man.”
