NHL Trade: Capitals Acquire Nick Jensen From The Red Wings

The Detroit Red Wings trade defenseman Nick Jensen to the Washington Capitals

The Detroit Red Wings have traded defenseman Nick Jensen and a 2019 5th round pick (Buffalo’s) to the Washington Capitals for defenseman Madison Bowey and a 2020 2nd round pick.

The 28-year old Jensen was drafted 150th overall in the 5th round of the 2009 draft by the Red Wings. He carries an $812,500 salary cap hit.

The 23-year old Bowey was drafted 53rd overall in the 2nd round of the 2013 draft by the Capitals. He carries a $1 million salary cap hit.

Washington Capitals: Capital GM Brian MacLellan: “Nick is a reliable modern-day defenseman who we feel can defend well and log valuable minutes for our club. At 28 years of age, we feel he is just entering his prime.”

Thoughts from the media

JJ Regan: “Bowey is a great guy who always has a smile on his face and was happy to talk to the media whenever asked. Sorry to see him go, but clearly he had fallen down the depth chart. It felt like he had more value on the market than he did for the at this point.”

Brian Lawton: “Nice return whenever, you see a trade like this expect Jensen to sign with I had price as a 2nd earlier in week and got a lot of no ways but in the end I believe this is good trade for both teams!”

Chris Peters: “The boring ol’ good trade for both teams. I think Detroit can give Bowey the quality opportunities to play and learn more at the NHL level that wasn’t afforded him on a contender.”

JJ Regan: “Jensen is a right shot defenseman and it was thought Detroit wanted to re-sign him. He’s a rental and it’s a steep cost, but this looks like a great fit.”

Cap Friendly: “At this point, given Washington’s limited cap space, any deal made before Monday will pretty much need to be money in, money out. Bowey has a $1M cap hit this season, while Jensen has a cap hit of $812,500.”
