The 29 year old Lack was undrafted. He carries a $2.75 million salary cap hit.
The 24 year old Murphy was drafted 12th overall in the 2011 draft by the Hurricanes. He carries a $787,500 cap hit.
The 22 year old Kanzig was drafted 67th overall in the third round of the 2013 draft by the Flames.
Thoughts from the media …
Bob McKenzie: “The upshot is CGY gets a back-up goalie in Lack for $1.375M with a year left on his contract. CAR’s end of it is financial housecleaning.”
Pierre LeBrun: “From Carolina’s perspective, while eating 50 percent of Lack deal isn’t ideal, it’s still better than a buyout. Which was next option.”
Luke DeCock: “Eddie Lack and Ryan Murphy, two of the Hurricanes’ biggest recent misfires, exit together. Onward.”
Corey Lavalette: “Kanzig is a giant defenseman — 6’7, 240+ — but spent most of last year in the ECHL. A project, for sure.
Corey Lavalette: “That’s $2M more off the cap with half of Lack’s $2.75M, all of Murphy’s $788K off the books”
Jonathan Willis: “On CAR’s side, it probably shows there wasn’t much market for Lack. With Lack, Darling and Ward under contract, needed to clear one.”
Jonathan Willis: “CGY doing smart things. Kanzig isn’t a prospect (and, frankly, wasn’t when drafted). Getting a cheap No. 2 G and a flyer on Murphy is good.”
NHL Prospects Watch: “Ryan Murphy being traded is interesting, always liked him, great skill level, don’t know what happened along the way, just too small for D?”
Pat Steinberg: “Ryan Murphy is a Carolina 2011 1st round pick, 12th overall. 5’11, 185 pounds, right shot d-man. 151 NHL games over 5 pro seasons.”
Pat Steinberg: “Lack aggregate over 4 NHL seasons: 0.911 SV%, 0.916 EV SV%. In Van: 72 starts, 0.917 SV% In Carolina: 54 starts, 0.902 SV%”
