The Detroit Red Wings have traded forward Thomas Vanek to the Florida Panthers for defenseman Dylan McIlrath and a 3rd round pick.

The Red Wings will retain 50 percent of Vanek’s contract.

On the 3rd round pick – if the Panthers make the playoffs, the draft pick becomes Arizona’s pick and not Florida’s. It would be higher/better pick.

The 33-year old Vanek was drafted 5th overall in the 2003 draft by the Sabres. He carries a $2.6 million cap hit and is a free agent at the end of the season.

The 24-year old McIlrath as drafted 10th overall in the 2010 draft by the Rangers. He carries a $800,000 NHL salary cap hit and will be a UFA at the end of the season
