The Edmonton Oilers have traded Jordan Eberle to the New York Islanders for Ryan Strome.
No salary was retained in the deal.
The 27 year old Eberle was drafted 22nd overall in the 2008 draft by the Oilers. He carries a $6 million cap hit.
The 23-year old Strome was drafted 5th overall in the 2011 draft by the Islanders. He carries a $2.5 million cap hit.
Thoughts from the media …
Bob Stauffer: “With McDavid and Draisaitl deals a priority Oilers gain cap space. Strome, like Eberle, talented, will give team flexibility in top 9”
Brian Compton: “No, this doesn’t take #Isles out of Duchene mix.”
Jason Brough: “Apparently Eberle’s trade value took a massive hit after his nightmare playoffs.”
Joe Yerdon: “I get it for the Isles. Gets Tavares a guy he’s done well with in the past. Oilers though? Hope Strome busts out and they cut salary?”
Dennis Bernstein: “Have to keep Mr. 91 happy. Shows a commitment and I think very good sign for Isles fans in that concern. Now Eberle has to man up.”
Luke Fox: “Islanders got the better player. Oilers get cap space to help sign Draisaitl and McDavid.”
Luke Fox: “Can’t wait to see if Eberle’s numbers can skyrocket with a fresh start and Tavares setting him up…”
NHL Numbers: “Eberle is signed at a $6M cap hit for two more seasons. Strome is signed for $2.5M for one more season and will be an RFA.”
Scott Wheeler: “The Oilers are trying really hard to screw this up for McDavid and he’s still just going to drag them to the playoffs every year.”
Cap Friendly: “At $6,000,000, Eberle immediately becomes the forward with the highest cap hit with the #Islanders. Boychuk on on D also has a $6M cap hit.”
